How Important is the Headline?

If you want to know how important the headline is, ask John Caples (well, technically you can’t because he died in 1990, but bear with me here).

Caples was one of the most successful copywriters who ever lived. A bona fide, certified sales machine, whose words were responsible for selling hundreds of millions of dollars worth of stuff. He wasn’t some semi-talented wannabe writer like me; he was the real deal.

Caples believed that the headline was so important, so integral to the success (or failure) of a campaign, that he devoted 1/5 of his seminal work on advertising strategies, Tested Advertising Methods, exclusively to the art of writing headlines.

In the words of the great man himself:

The success of an entire advertising campaign may stand or fall on what is said in the headlines.

Caples estimated that the headline can be responsible for 95% – or more – of the success of a marketing campaign.

Caples didn’t just pull arbitrary numbers out of thin air to make himself look clever; he was probably one of the first copywriters to advocate a scientific approach to testing sales copy.

He wanted to know how to make his sales copy more successful, and he knew that in order to evaluate the effectiveness of his copy in quantifiable ways he would need to systematically test small changes to see which versions worked better.

Essentially, he was using conversion rate optimisation (CRO) methods like A/B split-testing, response tracking and audience testing decades before the term was even invented (“conversion rate optimisation” was coined in 2007). Heck, he was using CRO techniques to test his headlines more than 20 years before Sir Tim Berners-Lee – the founder of the internet – was even born.

In one experiment, Caples discovered the winning headline outperformed the worst-performing headline by 19 times. Not 19% more sales, but 19 times more sales! Now imagine if he hadn’t done any testing and just used the weakest headline. If he had, I’d be writing about someone else.

Of course, Caples wasn’t the only copywriter who knew how important headlines were. David Ogilvy, a British advertising tycoon and the founder of advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, understood their importance only too well.

The headline is the ‘ticket on the meat’. Use it to flag down readers who are prospects for the kind of product you are advertising.

The headline’s only job is to get noticed and make your target prospect read the rest of the content or take the next step in the sales process.

It sounds simple, but in a world where your audience is overloaded with information and the average person is exposed to around 4,000-10,000 ads per day, writing headlines that stop people in their tracks is far from easy. But in the next section that’s exactly what I’ll show you how to do.

How to write killer headlines

If you want your email campaigns, blog posts, Facebook ads or social media posts to attract attention, you’re going to need to write attention-grabbing headlines – and lots of them.

1. Research your audience

The good news is that writing headlines is easy. The bad news is that writing good headlines is hard (unless you know the techniques and formulas I’m about to show you).

When prospects see your ad they make a quick decision, usually within a couple of seconds, to read it or turn the page, based largely on the subject line. But given the flood of commercial messages today, how can you convince a busy prospect – in just a few words – that your ad is worthy of their attention?

The “4 U’s” copywriting formula – which stands for “urgent”, “unique”, “ultra-specific” and “useful” – can help. Developed by business coach and serial entrepreneur Michael Masterson, the “4 U’s” formula works wonders for headlines, titles and email subject lines. With a little tweaking it can become a powerful blog writing tool as well.


Before spending time or money on something, people want to know if what they’re getting will solve their problem or provide the solution they’re looking for. In other words, they want to know if they’ll get something useful out of it.

If your headline fails to convey the usefulness of what you’re offering, why would your prospects want to read your content or buy your product or service? The answer, of course, is they wouldn’t.

In the headline “Sweden’s Miracle Formula Makes Your Skin Look Young Again”, the benefit is clearly younger looking skin. As a consumer I know that if I click the link I might find a skincare product that makes me look younger.

As another example, the headline “How to Get a Product to Sell If You Don’t Have One Already and How to Get It for Nothing” promises the reader two benefits: how to get a product to sell, and how to get it for free. Who wouldn’t want to read that article?


Urgency is a psychological trigger deeply rooted inside our brain that prompts us to act quickly. It relates to loss aversion or the so-called fear-of-missing-out (FOMO). When used correctly, it’s a very powerful marketing tool.

Urgency in headlines convinces people to open the email, click through to the blog post or purchase the product now rather than later, when they might become distracted by something else and forget about your content.

While urgency is very important for headlines, it should only be used if what you’re offering is genuinely time-sensitive or available in limited quantities. If your urgency or scarcity tactics are perceived as being manipulative, you’ll lose credibility.

A great example of using headlines to create a sense of urgency comes from local news programmes. They say things like, “Tonight at 9, Elon Musk’s SpaceX becomes the first private company to launch humans into orbit” or “A new twist in the Casey Anthony case, at 11”.

You can also prompt people to take action immediately by including scarcity words in your in your headline, such as “while stocks last” or “offer ending soon”. For instance, the headline “Dormeo 50% Sale While Stocks Last” entices the reader with the promise of a 50% discount on Dormeo products – but only if they act quickly.


The powerful headline either says something new or, if it says something the reader has heard before, says it in a new and fresh way. For example, “Why Japanese Women Have Beautiful Skin” was the headline in an email promoting a Japanese bath kit. This is different from the typical “Save 10% on Japanese Bath Kits”.


Bottom Line Inc (formerly Boardroom) is the absolute master of ultra-specific bullets, known as “fascinations”, that tease the reader into reading further and ordering the product. Examples: “What Never to Eat on an Airplane”, “Bills It’s OK to Pay Late” and “Best Time to File for a Tax Refund”.

Headline formulas

The quickest and easiest way to create effective headlines is to use a headline formula. Period.

Sure, you can sit there wracking your brains trying to come up with an intriguing, compelling, funny, exciting headline that nobody has ever thought of before, but you’ll be there for a while.

Or you can save your time and sanity by stealing one of the pretty awesome headline formulas listed below.

So what are headline formulas, and how do they work? I’m glad you asked.

Essentially, a headline formula is a collection of words and phrases arranged in such a way as to illicit an emotional response from the reader. Whether it’s curiosity, excitement, surprise or shock, the end goal is the same: to make the reader want to engage with the content.

The best thing about headline formulas is that they make writing headlines much faster. In fact, once you get into the habit of using formulas to create your headlines you’ll be able to produce compelling headlines pretty much on autopilot.

To use the formulas below, simply pick one and substitute the following values with your own words and phrases:

  • [Words] – Substitute words and phrases in square brackets with your own.
  • {Name} – Replace {Name} elements with a name – usually a person’s name, but it could also be the name of a business, organisation, group or some other entity.
  • {X} – Replace {X} elements with a number. Sometimes it might be worth experimenting by leaving out the number altogether, or replacing it with a word.
  • {Year} – Replace {Year} elements with the correct year.

Multiplier words

Multiplier words are words and phrases that magazines and publications often add to the beginning or end of a headline to make add interest, draw attention and make it sizzle.

When you find a headline formula or template that’s right for your content, it’s worth reviewing the list of multiplier words to see if there’s a word or phrase that will make it even better, or add an interesting twist on the concept.

A punctuation mark is often used to separate the multiplier word and the main headline, such as a colon (:), period (.), comma (,), exclamation mark (!), question mark (?) or dash (–). Brackets ([]) and parenthesis () can also be used to make multiplier words pop, and block capitals and italics can be equally effective.

Adding any of the following multiplier words to the beginning or end of your headline can add extra meaning and attention-grabbing sizzle to even the most ordinary title or headline.

Greed power words

The legendary copywriter Gary Halbert once said: “If you want someone to buy something, stomp on their greed glands until they bleed.”

Of course, he didn’t mean literally stomp on their neck; he meant exploit the fact that almost everyone, at some level, is interested in either making or saving money.

Greed power words exploit the desire to want more than you need, and to want more than what others have. These words trigger that tendency by playing on loss aversion, or simply by making something sound more valuable.
